Song of the Day

Kanye West feat. Bon Iver - Lost in the World
--------------------Ketchup and mustard, indie guys and beards - some combinations are so harmonious, they are accepted and even celebrated (No Shave November). We like our collaborations in music, too. Beyonce and Jay-Z, She & Him and Conan O'Brien, and Aerosmith and Run DMC are key examples of perfect music collaborations.

Then Mr. West releases his Pitchfork Perfect 10 album with the oddest partner to collaborate with him yet. Bon Iver offered his hushed and mournfully magical rock chops to My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy, and you have to wonder what this will sound like, right?

Lyrically, it definitely rings of a song written by Iver. But everything else is very Kanye, with the copious amounts of autotune, soaring choir and hip-hop beats throughout. It's an inneresting collaboration to say the least, and whether I love it or meh it, I can't say. But have a listen and see what you think.

Tim Cohen - Let's Black Out
------------Don't check out of the post just because of the Jersey Shore-esque song title. Tim Cohen isn't a house-music airhorn blaster. On his second solo LP, Cohen sounds like Fleet Foxes on kush, with droning vocals and harmonica lumbering slowly and beautifully through songs like "Let's Black Out." With other songs like "Haunted Hymns" that have bopping piano and bells, there's no wrong move for Cohen on his new album, Laugh Tracks. Anyone who enjoys Bon Iver and the likes will like Tim Cohen's everything about Laugh Tracks down to the notebook-doodle album cover.

Magic Man - Daughter
----------Though you may think that I am the sole creator of my love of music, I can actually admit that I was not the reason behind my passion. A dear friend of mine saved my soul from Scorpion and Guns n' Roses in favor of The Starting Line and Ratatat.
Upon meeting with her today, she showed me Magic Man, a duo of Tufts students who created their album Real Life Color by emailing and forwarding samples and pieces back and forth across the country. Sound a little Thievery Corporation? Funny you should think that - if you're a connoisseur of all things electro-indie or Ben Gibbard, Magic Man is perfect for you.

And no, there's no cover of "Such Great Heights," which seems like the obligatory cover for anyone with a Mac Air, Electribe and Twitter page. With vocals reminiscent of Bon Iver and beats like Thievery, Magic Man is a duo of wonder.

Bon Iver - Blood Bank
--------------On his myspace page he tells you to be patient, and in his music, there's no need to say anything - the haunting melody of a first encounter that halts time. Folk-songwriter Justin Vernon's latest project, Bon Iver, is a corruption of the French term, "bon hiver" meaning "good winter." Vernon's resonant, eerie, and even melancholic sound was so well recieved in the United Kingdom, that the release of Blood Bank EP reached Number One on the U.K. Indie Chart. Get "Blood Bank" from Bon Iver EP, Blood Bank.
