Stealing Music, Library Style

This itty bitty image uploaded from my phone is what can happen if you decide to get music from the library. It's a humongous stack - a four-year old girl helped me carry them! It's free like illegal downloads, but you're using resources beyond your own computer that won't give you a virus.

So far I've uploaded Ledisi's Lost and Found and Muddy Waters Mannish Boy. In the stack is a variety of artists like Neko Case, Gregory Isaacs, John Mayer and T.I. It's going to be quite the challenge finding today's song; I've got lots to sift through and still need to get stuff done today.

If you're a student like me, college libraries usually have killer CD libraries kept with the DVDs and recording equipment. It couldn't hurt to try it out, especially if you're the type to procrastinate.

Angels & Airwaves - Hallucinations
---------------I'm foaming at the mouth here, people. What better way to welcome 2010 than a track listing of AVA's upcoming album, LOVE, and a listen to their single "Hallucinations?" Sounds like a perfect 1o (I had to do the pun, love it).
And as we all know, LOVE is free. No kidding - AVA is offering their album for lovers all over the world this Valentine's Day for jack squat, so downloading the album into your girlfriend's itunes won't be the dinner deal-breaker (sorry, boys, but you can listen to the album on the way to dinner!).

Editors - Escape the Nest

-------------------Once again, I'd like to thank the public library for letting me borrow a stack of CDs to feed the belly of my already morbidly obese laptop. Seriously, that place isn't just for encyclopedias, study sessions or wrapping up a 12-page term paper at three a.m. Plus, I get a nerdy kick out of the labels that indicate the band on the CD is a "Musical Group."

Among the dozen or so "Musical Groups" I selected was Editors An End Has A Start. Editors "Escape the Nest" is riddled with wailing guitar and rides a sweeping, dramatic creshendo. The lyrics sung by a slightly operatic Tom Smith fatnasize the triumph of an ant-sized love in the overwhelming and intimidating size of reality.

Music Turf: CD Alley

While visiting my sister in the town of Chapel Hill, we spent the day wandering around various locations on Franklin Street, the main area for university hubbub and brou-ha-ha like shopping for collegiate regalia, digging through thrift stores and buying archaeic things such as CDs and vinyl.

The last time I was at a record store, I had enough room to do roundoffs in it (that's a fancy-schmancy cartwheel, just to be obnoxious like that). But CD Alley was a crawlspace of floor-to-ceiling CDs, with rows and rows of music jutting from the walls and filling up every corner. Without any objective searching, I strolled a satisfied stroll out of this treasure trove of tunes with:

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls

Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil

Not a bad find from a store I wanted to spend hours in, but couldn't afford such a luxury. If you crouch underneath the sagging shelves of discs, you can find rows of vinyl can be a pain in the rear to look through if you aren't sitting indian-style and have loads of patience. But that's protocol for records - the ones you love the most are diamonds among a Sahara-sized rough.

The next time I'm heading to the Hill, I'll be making a visit to CD Alley once more for some hellagood used CDs. It was, I have to say, one of the most pleasant surprises of my weekend, and anyone who's in the neighborhood should check it out.

A Path Less Traveled - An Eye For An Eye Makes Us All Pirates

-----------------My usual formula for finding music on Myspace is accepting a friend request and hearing out the material with no other frame of reference. But for this Song of the Day, I was lucky enough to hear about the popcore stylings of APLT from the band's photographer and brilliant friend, Eric Kirk. The seven members of A Path Less Traveled hail from the Atlanta area, and will celebrate the release of their new EP From Here On Out this Friday with A Heartcake, She Came From Above, Show the Fight, and A Fight For Life.

So what separates APLT from all the other hardcore bands in the southeast? "An Eye For An Eye Makes Us All Pirates" is one of the most popular demos on Epitaph Record's demo forum "Demo-Lition." The teaser tracks to the new EP are effortlessly good with heated vocals and the members exhaust every fiber of their instruments to give an outstanding show.
