For everyone who's donning a cap and gown for their 2009 graduation from high school, college, or even the fifth grade, I threw together this celebratory compilation. You can blast it on your way to and from the ceremony or at your grad party (just make sure the grandparents don't have their hearing aids turned up too high).

Fall

My friend's father was murdered yesterday.

He was shot point blank on his way into work, just ready to begin another day and to make an honest living.

Does it make sense? Of course not. You can't label this as an accident. Another victim of a senseless crime. It is an unwonted tragedy. I have yet to cry, I'm shocked, confused, anxious, and grateful it wasn't my family. I ask that you keep my friend's family in your hearts.

The first thing I did after talking to several friends on the phone was play "Self Conclusion" by Spill Canvas. The first song I listened to after hearing this news was "Venice Queen" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. As I write this, I am listening to Something Corporate's North, an album that has willed me through the worst.

What do you listen to in times of tragedy?

Song of the Day 12/13/08

Something Corporate - Bad Days

---------------Ok, I'll admit it: I was pretty sure I was scrolling through every single SoCo song that an Andrew McMahoniac would ever want. But then, by the grace of an album cover with a burning piano, Audioboxer came into my life. Even though Bad Days has melancholic lyrics, the instrumentals make it feel alright with fantastic barhouse piano and Sunset Strip rock riffs. Get Bad Days from Audioboxer, and let all your Something Corporate friends know you love them.
