Song of the Day

Never Shout Never - Can't Stand It

-----------It's been a big week for music, and it's not even Grammy night! Red Hot Chili Peppers welcomed Josh Klinghoffer as the band's new guitarist, Take Action tour kicked off and Death Cab reassured us they're working on an album this year.

All of this, and Never Shout Never released what is love? for a cool $7.99 (plus the governer's wages) at Target. "Can't Stand It" is too freaking adorable for words - there is clapping, a smiling horn section and disgustingly "super-duper cute" lyrics.

If you hate everything that has to do with love at the moment, do not listen to this song. It will gross you out, I promise you that. But if you're up for it, take a listen to "Can't Stand It" from what is love?

Yes,that is my left foot propped ever so dangerously and nonchalantly on top of my vent. I wouldn't recommend this stance for new drivers...JUS sayin'. I'm trying out some nifty new tricks with Paint (yes, yes, guffaw and point at my meek efforts), but the point is that I went on a short-ish trip today, and here's the list of what I jammed to on the way to and from:

1. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville

Good for the girl or guy who enjoys more rennegade heartland-ish music. Phair's low moan fits the often eyebrow-raising themes in Guyville like a Dunkin' Donut and Coffee.

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

With adventure ready songs such as "Around the World," "Emitremmus," and "Road Trippin'" as well as the more contemplative "Scar Tissue" and "Porcelian," this funk rock album was made for the road.

3. Jay Z - The Blueprint 3

The oddball in the bunch, right? Correct, but HOVA's run-this-town raps are ideal for feeling like you're driving a Murcielago instead of a...ahem....Honda.

4. Kings of Leon - Because of the Times

Back to the rock, and back to the roots with wailing guitars and pavement-pounding rock n' roll. By far the best Kings album there is.

Told you it was a short trip! I have just begun a long-extended and desperately needed vacation, but I'll be back with more new songs soon.

Take care!

Off to California

From controversial social propositions to rolling golden landscapes, California has a little bit of everything for those who want to experience the majestry (and oddities) that makes up the Golden State. For example, who knew that the state folk dance is square dancing? To honor this wonderfully diverse state, throw on your peasant skirt and swang your pardner to this Golden State mix.

The California One's

Ten Reasons to Love It

1. Jack's Mannequin - Miss California

---While it's not about the homophobic, platinum blonde bimbo that stumbled over questions in the Miss America pageant, Andrew McMahon's pledge to his golden girl is surrounded by beautifully soaring piano and sharp guitars.

2. Weezer - Beverly Hills

---Ah, yes - Beverly Hills. Weezer takes over the Playboy mansion in their music video to raise a toast to the fame, wealth, and status that comes with living in this exclusive L.A. playground. Sure, they may be "no-class-beat-down-fools," but who says fools can't strike gold?

3. Metro Station - California

---The Golden State is often seen as a romantic escape for the young and in love. Metro Station's techno-pop anthem embraces this truth, urging lovers to pack up and leave as soon as possible.

4. The Eagles - Hotel California

---A song about the tragic results when fame and wealth consume the greedy. This Eagle's hit is sononymous with Hollywood temptations, as well as a killer guitar solo to wrap up this Western poem.

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

---Following an alternative formula to the woes of the Eagle's earlier hit, "Californication" is Anthony Keidis' depiction of the best and worst part of the fantasy land where he grew up too fast.

6. Led Zeppelin - Going to California

---Laden with beautiful western mandolins and classical guitars, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant dreamily fly through new tomorrows and reaching the end of the earth.

7. Eddie Vedder - Toulumne

---While this song is only a minute long, Vedder's exploration of strictly instrumentals mimic the silent wonder of nature. Written specifically for the motion picture Into the Wild, A young Chris McCandless wanders among the lush forests of Toulumne with this song playing in the movie background.

8. The Decemberists - California One Youth and Beauty Brigade

---Who's up for a long drive to look at some of the most picturesque scenery in the world? From Big Sur to Baja, the historic Highway One stretches the coast for miles and miles of endless ocean and staggering cliffs. The Decemberists' meandering ode to the road is perfect for the drive down.

9. Brandston - Earthquakes and Sharks

---Sure it's pretty, but California is a bitch when it comes to relentless heat, pollution, and of course traffic jams on the 405. Brandston covers it all in this clever lugy hocked on the seemily perfect face of Mexico and California.

10. Phantom Planet - California

---Phantom Planet's O.C. anthem is the reason most of my generation became obsessed with the state in the first place. Everyone with hearing abilities can recognize the piano intro, and it's the type of song that instills a need for adventure, or at least a change of pace.

Fall

My friend's father was murdered yesterday.

He was shot point blank on his way into work, just ready to begin another day and to make an honest living.

Does it make sense? Of course not. You can't label this as an accident. Another victim of a senseless crime. It is an unwonted tragedy. I have yet to cry, I'm shocked, confused, anxious, and grateful it wasn't my family. I ask that you keep my friend's family in your hearts.

The first thing I did after talking to several friends on the phone was play "Self Conclusion" by Spill Canvas. The first song I listened to after hearing this news was "Venice Queen" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. As I write this, I am listening to Something Corporate's North, an album that has willed me through the worst.

What do you listen to in times of tragedy?

Song of the Day

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Porcelain

---------------It's been a while since I've compiled a brand-spanking new mix, so as I was perusing my library (in reverse order, which, as my sister advised me, is an AWESOME way to discover new songs), I found "Porcelain", an ethereal lullaby tucked in Californication. The lyrics are melancholic, and Anthony Keidis' trades in his loud and proud funk for a soft, soothing whisper. Get "Porcelain" from Red Hot Chili Pepper's Californication.
