Talib Kweli - I Try

------------I try to vary the music that I walk around town to everyday, but today I found myself listening to Common's entire catalog. Since I don't like to repeat artists on this blog, I handed my hip-hop driven mind to Pandora to point me in a similar direction. Kweli came on, and I'm more than satisfied.

After a night of glitzy and glamorous playtime at the Grammys, I wanted something a little more pensive (and an album that's a bit mature for music turnaround) to welcome the new month and a new year of music. Talib Kweli teams up with Mary J. Blige on the stark confessional, "I Try," with razor-sharp rhymes slicing through thoughts on heritage, and the status quo of music. The Beautiful Struggle, is the Brooklyn emcee's 2004 project.

Ghostland Observatory

Mind Elixer opening for Ghostland Observatory (above)

OK...can I just get started on how unexpectedly fantastic the show was? If you, like many, have never heard of G.O. or followed my request to attend the show with the question "What is that", let me tell you that Aaron Behrens and Thomas Ross Turner are on an electro-rock mission to bring their party everywhere. Therefore, you're not gonna be oblivious to their music for much longer.

The show was as much about the lasers, lights, and strobes as the duo's music itself. You would imagine correctly that from the pictures, focus was no picnic to achieve. Still, (or not still), it was fun to shoot.

Lydia - A Fine Evening For a Rogue

---------Quite the rainy, chilly day. When you're living amongst the clouds that drag themselves lazily across mountaintops, a snuggly hoodie and some great music (and coffee from BeansTalk) is sublime. Today, we'll take a listen to Lydia, the indie rock darlings of Phoenix, Arizona who have touched the hearts of those who seek the instrumentally precise, the clean and beautifully somber vocals of Leighton Antelman, and the introspective. "A Fine Evening For a Rogue" exemplifies all of these fragile yet certain characteristics of the sextet. Get "A Fine Evening For a Rogue" from Lydia's album, Illuminate, illustrated by Becky Filip with some of the most captivating artwork I've seen in quite some time.
